People want to participate in psychological assessments for many reasons.

  • Some people are trying to understand the way in which their mind works
  • A better understanding of what is going on can help them get more from therapy.
  • Others have difficulties with organization, planning, focus, and executive function, leaving them wondering whether they might have adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

  • Many people pursue individualized psychological assessment in order to better understand their past.  To know if their anxiety or depression is due to trauma, life experience, or a more long-standing mental-health concern (such as Bipolar Disorder, Major Depressive DisorderGeneralized Anxiety Disorder, or a range of other diagnoses).

Regardless of your reason for seeking assessment, LifePath Therapy is committed to offering you the highest level of care. Our psychologists want to give you both an accurate diagnosis but also treatment recommendations.

Psychological Testing Basics

Generally, Psychological Testing is helpful when you and your therapist want more information to help determine exactly what your diagnosis is.  Getting an accurate diagnosis can help you get the best possible treatment. Therefore, we often use psychological testing when someone is having confusing, complex symptoms or with individuals who simply want to know the reasons their minds operate in the way they do. Individualized assessment can be of use to clients with:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders (formerly known as Autism, Nonverbal Learning Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder)
  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder
  • Bipolar I and II Disorders
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Personality Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress and other Trauma-related Disorder

What Psychological Testing Involves

Many clients worry that psychological testing will be difficult, scary, or overly clinical. However, it can truly be an empowering experience to get testing as the first step toward getting the services you need. First, your psychologist will begin to develop a working relationship with you. Then, they will work with you to gather information about your past and get a sense of the concerns bringing you in for testing. After they get to know you, the psychologist will select a thorough, personal series of tests to meet your specific needs. Usually, most clients will sit for one or two sessions totaling no more than three hours each.

Psychological testing methods might include:

  • simple scales that ask about relevant life experiences
  • personality inventories that assess various symptoms
  • computer-based assessments to measure your distractibility and response speed
  • hands-on tasks designed to measure various areas of cognition

All of the assessments LifePath uses are empirically validated. In other words, they’ve been used over and over again and shown to get similar results.  You can trust the diagnosis we recommend. Furthermore, these tests are able to not only identify areas a person is struggling, but also a client’s unique strengths and ways of being in the world.

What happens after my psychological testing in Chicago is complete?

  1. After your psychologist has collected all of the data, they will create a report combining information from all of the assessments used. This report will provide you with an accurate diagnosis,  help give you a better understanding of your strengths, weaknesses, and your own individual way of interacting with the world.
  2. The psychologist takes around three weeks to create this report outlining your performance on the various measures used. With this report, they can explain what this performance means, how these findings affect you in the real world, and make recommendations for how to move forward.
  3. You will have the chance to sit down with your testing psychologist and review the report together. That way, you can ask as many questions as you need to truly understand what your assessment has revealed. Confidentiality is key to any meaningful therapeutic relationship. Thus, your assessment is yours alone. It will not be provided to anyone, including healthcare providers, without your written consent.

Who Pays for Psychological Testing?

Most major insurance companies will cover the cost of your assessment. However, they will want to show that the assessment is “medically necessary.” Our team will work with you to show the insurance company how this assessment can improve your life and help you get the help you truly need. Of course, we want to ensure you understand your benefits before we begin psychological testing. In summary, LifePath will work with you and your insurance company.
