The Wisdom of “Resistance”: A Somatic Perspective

When
September 20th, 2024
9:00 am – 12:00 pm Central Time

The work of psychotherapy can be fulfilling and life-affirming. All is well until we meet ‘resistance.’ This workshop will explore, from a body-centered perspective, the possibility that what we call resistance may be important information about the client’s survival strategies. We will engage our curiosity to uncover what resistance might be telling us about the nervous system of the client and the therapist, and what may be happening in the resonance between the two. We will also discuss somatic strategies for working with what is revealed.

Learning Objectives

Participants will

  • learn to recognize autonomic nervous system generated self protective strategies

  • develop awareness and skills for encouraging curiosity

  • understand attunement and resonance through a somatic lens recognize their own strategies for connection & helping (merging, joining, disconnecting)

  • identify elements that support and interfere with therapeutic engagement from a somatic perspective
